The sons of Carl Heinrich Junghans

I stumbled upon a comment left by Peggy Bailey (thank you Peggy) that confirmed a photo of Emil Yunghans.

Now that I have a photo of all the Junghans brothers that left Germany in the 1800's and came to America as either a Junghans or Yunghans, here they are:

Emil Yunghans

Emil Yunghans, the eldest son of Christliebe Kuehn and Carl Heinrich Junghans.

Otto Heinrich Junghans, Paul Richard Junghans & Carl F Yunghans

Otto Heinrich was the third child, Paul Richard was the fourth (and last) child and Carl Frederick was the second child born to Christliebe Kuehn and Carl Heinrich Junghans.

The two eldest brothers, Emil Heinrich and Carl Frederick changed their last name to Yunghans from Junghans sometime after they left Germany for America.    The two younger brothers, Otto Heinrich and Paul Richard opted to keep the "J".

Unfortunately I have yet to find a photo of the Yunghans/Junghans brothers together or of their parents.

Otto Junghans - family tree

Christliebe (Kuehn) and Carl Heinrich Junghans'  second son, Carl (Yunghans) and wife Hannah (Kerlifofaky) did not have any children, which ended their branch of the Junghans family tree.

Christliebe (Kuehn) and Carl Heinrich Junghans' third son, Otto and wife Hulda (Hahmann) had two children, Otto Jr and Martha.   Their family tree and the subsequent generations can be found here.

Here is a photo that shows placement of the burial plots for Martha (Junghans) Dvonik, husband John next to Martha's mother and father, Hulda (Hahmann) and Otto Junghans Sr at the Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery.

I had labeled this photo back in August 2007 but somehow the labeling was corrupted so I have no idea which of Otto and Hulda Junghans' children or grandchildren are depicted.

If anyone knows, please let me know.

Here are some photos of Hulda (Hahmann) and Otto Junghans' grave markers at the Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery in Mequon, Wisconsin.

Hula was born July 4, 1865 and died August 17, 1922.

 Otto was born September 2, 1862 in Germany and died June 16, 1931 in Mequon, Wisconsin.

Otto was born September 2, 1861 in Germany and died June 16, 1931 in Mequon, Wisconsin.

While this obituary was limited in information, it did help me confirm I was on the right track when I was researching the family tree.    The two surviving brothers mentioned would have been my great grandfather, Paul Richard and their older brother Carl (who had changed the spelling of his last name to Yunghans).   Eldest brother Emil Yunghans had died two years earlier in 1929.

Returning back to the families of Otto Junghans, the brother of my great grandfather, Paul Richard Junghans.......

I'm not sure when this photo was taken, but based upon the previous photo I posted of Otto and two of his brothers, Carl and Paul Richard, my guess is that the photo was taken sometime in the late 1920's.

This is the only photo I've seen of three of the four Junghans (Yunghans) brothers together.

From left to right:   Otto Junghans,  my great grandfather, Paul Richard Junghans and Carl F Yunghans.

Eldest brother Emil Yunghans (who was not included in the photo) died February 19, 1929 in Vincennes, Indiana and Otto Junghans died June 16, 1931 in Mequon, Wisconsin.

I'm not sure where the photo (Vincennes, Indiana or in Wisconsin) was taken but based upon the deaths of Emil and Otto I am guessing the photo was taken sometime between February 1929 and June 1931.

1920 US Census - Otto Junghans

In 1920, Emil and Carl Yunghans' younger brother Otto Junghans was living in Mequon, Wisconsin with wife Hulda.

Otto and Hulda's daughter Martha was living next door with husband John Dvonik and their two children, Walter and Alice.

Otto continued his profession as a farmer.   John Dvonik was listed as a 'hired man' probably working on the farm of his father or his father-in-law.

1910 US Federal Census - Otto Junghans

In 1910, the 2nd youngest Junghans brother, Otto, continued to live on the farm in Mequon, Wisconsin. Also residing at the farm were Otto's wife, Hulda, their children Otto Jr and Martha and Otto Jr's wife Ella.




The census record also indicates a niece by the name of Martha, which must be from Hulda's side of the family, unless the census taker made an error and that entry belongs to the household next to Otto and Hulda's.

1905 Wisconsin Census - Otto Junghans

In 1905, Wisconsin had a 2nd mid-decade census. Otto Junghans and wife Hulda lived with their two children, Otto Jr and Martha on their farm in Mequon, Wisconsin.





Also living with them was Martha's father, Ehrenfield Hahmann (though the census record didn't list the last name, leading one to believe his last name was Junghans) and a 12 year old named Lydia.

I am not sure whether Lydia was a family member since a last name wasn't used for her either. The document indicates Lydia was born in Michigan and as far as I know, no Junghans' ever lived in Michigan so I'm inclined to believe she was a relative of Hulda or possibly a boarder.

1900 US Federal Census - Otto Junghans

Yesterday I was curious as to who was living in the Junghans' household during the 1895 Wisconsin Census and decided to track down the 1900 US Federal Census for some clues.



In 1900 Otto and Hulda Junghans, their children Otto Jr and Martha were living at the home of Hulda's parents, Ehrenfried and Augusta Hahmann. (Though Otto was listed as head of household).

This pretty much answers the question as to who was living in the household in 1895, though I do not know who the 7th person may have been.

Mequon Plat Maps

Here is the 1873 Mequon Plat Map. Otto Junghans' father in law, Ehrenfried Hahmann owned the property on Donges Bay Road.

I was in Mequon, Wisconsin I took these photos of the house they lived in about 120 years ago.




The house is located on Donges Bay Road outside the town of Mequon.

Meanwhile.......

While Paul Junghans and family had been starting his family, older brother Otto was living in Mequon, Wisconsin.

Otto and wife Hulda settled on a farm located at 8519 W Donges Bay, which had been built by Hulda's father or grandfather, Ehrenfried Hamann in 1860.



The city of Mequon put up a sign indicating the property is now a landmark.

Moving to America

I spent hours attempting to locate documentation confirming when the Junghans brothers came to America. The microfilm at the national archives facility in Denver was an unsuccessful, tedious job. Not knowing the exact dates of travel, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack, though I did know my great grandfather Paul had come to America sometime in 1886.

In 2007 while in Vincennes, Indiana trying to locate information on one of the Junghans brothers, I was looking through a volume of "Germans to America" which are a series of books that documented immigration of Germans to the United States in the later half of the 19th century.

Otto Junghans' was 17 at the time of his arrival. (The name was misspelled as "Junghauns".)

Otto Junghans is in the 2nd column, 30th down. The ship left Bremen, Germany and arrived in New York on March 3, 1879. Otto would turn 18 less than 6 months later.

PRV indicates where the passenger came from - GR represents Germany.
VIL indicates what village the passenger came from - ZZZ represents unknown.
DES indicates the destination - USA represents the United States of America.

I know of two immigration documents online for a Paul Junghans, one indicates his age was 12 and the passengers with him were clearly not our relatives. The other document states his arrival was in 1887, one year AFTER his 1886 marriage to Wilhelminia in Milwaukee and traveling with a "Mgda Junghans; definitely not his wife.

It's easy to fall into the trap that you have found a record that belongs with your ancestor, so it helps to have confirming documentation and facts to weed out those that do not belong. Also, Paul, Otto, Karl (or Carl) are very common German names.
